Heard both 8.5 and 8.8. Near Concepcione Apparently nearly the same epicenter as their record huge 1960 quake.
CNN has some talking heads while they relay Chilean TV news video. Wreckage all over. Power loss. No idea of the true scope of it.

Yes, that's huge, but you're going to see the difference between a country that is prepared for earthquakes (Chile) and one that isn't (Haiti).

I can't even imagine. I *think* we were on CNN and they were talking to a woman there, she said the shaking lasted three minutes.

Fox not covering it as well as CNN.
Rural highway bridges over rivers collapsed, and more alarming, in Santiago de Chile, about 200 miles from the epicenter, some facade and glass damage on buildings, and what appear to be highway overpasses collapsed, some of which had cars on them. This was Santiago Centro, damage probablly worse in the poorer suburbs.
The Chileans (I've known a few) are of Italian, Spanish, German and French stock, just enough indigenous people to make pizco (awesome in a pizco sour) popular, and they are generally free market and hard working, more so than anywhere else in South America I can thing of, and they should bounce back quicker than Haiti.
The tsunami has already devastated local Chilean coastal villages, and the sirens should be going off about now in Hawaii, to give people about 5 hours to wake up and head inland.

This is an 8.8 as compared to the 8.5 in 1960 The 1960 Tsunami, Hilo Thirty-four years ago, on May 23, 1960, a tsunami destroyed much of downtown Hilo. Tsunami, or seismic sea waves, are generated in several ways, including by large submarine explosive eruptions, by landslides where rock slides into or beneath the sea surface, and by large earthquakes that displace rocks below sea level. The waves generated spread outward in all directions and travel across the oceans at speeds between 425 and 500 miles per hour. Most tsunami that cause widespread damage are produced by large earthquakes that cause fault movements of the sea floor, including the one in 1960. These giant waves wreak their havoc first near to, and then far from, the site of the original earthquake.
The earthquake that caused the 1960 tsunami occurred off the west coast of South America and had a magnitude between 8.25 and 8.5. The waves reached the Hawaiian Islands in about 15 hours. This tsunami caused little damage elsewhere in the islands, but the Hilo Bay area was hard hit. Sixty-one people lost their lives and about 540 homes and businesses were destroyed or severely damaged. The wave heights in Hilo Bay reached 35 feet compared to only 3-17 feet elsewhere. The water washed as far inland as Kilauea Avenue/Keawe Street through the entire present downtown area and to Kekuanaoa Street near Kilauea Avenue.

I live in southern orange county, CA - just drove down to the local beach to see if I could see my first tsunami... No luck.
But there was a very strong northern current. No way I'd get in that water today. (Besides, its raining)

Mike might now know this one. The San Francisco quake supposedly generated displacement on sections of the fault almost 8 meters (~ 25 feet). A quake that supposedly was an order of magnitude lower.
Now, comparing movement on slip faults and subduction faults may be flawed. But earthquakes of this magnitude in the same area every 50 years, does this imply a subduction rate of almost (or perhaps in excess of) 6 inches a year?

8.5 and greater quakes every 50 years apparently on the same fault segment? That is impressive.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_Valdivia_earthquake The 1960 Valdivia earthquake or Great Chilean Earthquake (Spanish: Gran terremoto de Valdivia) of 22 May 1960 is to date the most powerful earthquake ever recorded, rating 9.5 on the moment magnitude scale.[1] It occurred in the afternoon (19:11 GMT, 14:11 local time) and its resulting tsunami affected southern Chile, Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, eastern New Zealand, southeast Australia, and the Aleutian Islands in Alaska.
The epicenter was near Caρete (see map) some 900 km (435 miles) south of Santiago, although Valdivia, Chile was the most affected city. It caused localised tsunamis that severely battered the Chilean coast, with waves up to 25 meters (82 ft). The main tsunami raced across the Pacific Ocean and devastated Hilo, Hawaii. Waves as high as 10.7 metres (35 ft) were recorded 10,000 kilometres (6,000 miles) from the epicenter, and as far away as Japan and the Philippines.
The death toll and monetary losses arising from such a widespread disaster can never be precisely known. Various estimates of the total number of fatalities from the earthquake and tsunamis have been published, with the USGS citing studies with figures of 2231, 3000, or 5700 killed,[2] and another source uses an estimate of 6000 dead.[3] Different sources have estimated the monetary cost ranged from 400 million to 800 million US dollars[2] (or 2.8 to 5.5 billion in 2007 dollars, adjusted for inflation.)
