An anonymous blogger has taken on the daunting challenge of eating public school lunches every day in 2010. Her blog, entitled "Fed Up: School Lunch Project," is worth scanning. The results (and pictures) are sick. ht John Locke Foundation

I take it schools don't have kitchens and kitchen staff any more ? The school lunches we ate sure as hell looked more like food than that.

Not all schools serve crap like that. Our schools have kitchen staff that actually cook the food they serve. I love grilled cheese and tomato soup days. Somehow, I end up at school during lunch on those days....must be coincidence

Cafeterias in my county vary widely in quality. The cafeteria I'm dining at this year is WAAAAY better than the school last year, but neither can compare to the high school I worked my first year. Have you ever eaten healthy food without seasoning of any kind? Yeah, nothing like cold, unseasoned, half cooked broccoli! Unfortunately, the health nazis want to make sure that no sneaky fat is in the diet of growing kids.
Now, I've eaten some nasty food in the Duval County (Jacksonville) cafeterias. That food was mostly starches.

Ewwwwww, I wouldn't eat that school lunch. Like I said, the cafeteria's baked chicken and shepherd's pie is GOOD, as is their veggie soup, chili, tuna fish, etc. Nothing comes in those nasty cellophane packages.

School lunch today was veggie beef soup or shepherds pie or spicy or plain chicken cutlet sandwich with fresh baked rolls, green beans, carrots, chef salad, orange, cooked apples or banana, chocolate or plain milk, orange or apple juice.
The teachers also have a separate salad bar and food area. Apple bread pudding for dessert today!

Today, oven "fried" chicken, corn, green beans, various salad ingredients, freshly baked whole wheat rolls sweet or unsweetened tea or lemonaid. The kids had a choice of chicken or cheese pizza, corn, green beans, salad, whole wheat rolls, apple or orange juice, chocolate or plain milk, and choice of ice cream.

When the kids were in elementary school, I had to pack them a lunch every day. the school did not provide any lunch service. Then we moved and the new schools DID have school lunches. I thought I was in heaven since I didn't have to pack lunches everyday.

The federal remuneration for reduced/free lunches doesn't cover the cost of the lunch; however, the local school boards still use it to partially defray the cost because school lunches may be the only food the kids are getting all day.

School lunch today: Chicken teriyaki over rice, broccoli and cheese casserole (very excellent), fresh carrots cooked al dente, and pineapple upside down cake. The kids got more choices, but I didn't look at their line as I was running behind and only had about 15 minutes to grab and gobble.

First of all, we don't get food like that, sadly. It's all pre-packaged down at the centralized kitchen district spent a lot of money to build some years ago. Secondly, we don't get teachers' menu--there's no longer (hasn't been for several years now) access to food from the staff lounge--we get to cut into line with the kids to get our food.
I never even leave my classroom.
